Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology

This department promotes safe and effective use of medicine throughout the hospital. Responsibilities include inpatient service for the management and assessment of overdoses and poisoning, consulting on therapeutic problems, research and teaching.

The leaflets Understanding Side Effects of Medicines and Understanding Side Effects by the Australian Self-Medication Industry’ answer some common questions people may have about taking medicines, in particular, the risk of side effects versus the benefits of taking a medicine.

The leaflets provide general information on:
  • How common side effects can be
  • What to do if you get a side effect
  • Weighing the risks and benefits
  • Getting information on your medicine
  • Reducing the chance of side effects
  • When side effects can happen; and
  • Reporting side effects
