Medical Oncology

The Medical Oncology Department at St Vincent’s Hospital focuses on the care, treatment and management of patients with cancer.
The team consists of:
• Medical oncologists
• Cancer care nurses
• Cancer care co-ordinators
• Clinical trials team
• Clinical psychologists
• Genetic counsellors

Holistic approach to patient care
The Medical Oncology department works closely with the surgeons, radiotherapists, haematologists and palliative care physicians as well as a full range of paramedical staff such as social workers, dieticians, occupational therapists and physiotherapists. This close co-operation leads to a well organised, efficient and caring multidisciplinary approach to the management of patients with cancer.

The department takes a holistic approach to the treatment of patients. Psychological support is a very important component in the care of patients with cancer. Thanks to the support of the Nelune Foundation, the department now has two clinical psychologists to help care for our patients.

The Medical Oncology Department cares for over 600 new, and nearly 4,000 follow-up patients per annum. Over 3,500 chemotherapeutic procedures are given each year.

Family Cancer Service & Genetic Counselling
This service is provided by a specialist doctor in cancer genetics and a genetic counsellor who provide risk assessment for individuals and families, discuss risk reducing strategies and arrange genetic testing where indicated.

Research & clinical trials
The Medical Oncology Department has a strong research component. Clinical trials are conducted in all the common cancers.

Co-operation with the Garvan Institute of Medical Research has led to the creation of one of the largest tissue banks for prostate cancer in the world. This has already led to some important scientific discoveries which may lead to better treatments. Research is partly funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council and other grants, as well as donations.
